In My Garden

On Thursday's last summer, I attempted to feature something growing in my yard. As the snow started to fly and the wind started to blow, I changed my Thursday posts to From The Good Life. Although, we're not getting a lot of warmer Spring weather, signs of Spring are starting to appear.

Tim built a raised bed last year and for the first time I planted oregano and sage. After the first frost, we covered the sage and oregano with straw. Our winter this year was pretty darn cold and I was concerned, especially in a raised bed, my herbs wouldn't come back this Spring. Just a week or so ago, Tim uncovered them and said to take a look because they were starting to show signs of life. Excited they survived, I googled to see when or if I should cut them back. Yes, you should trim them but only after they start to show a lot of new growth. This past Sunday, I went out to trim them back and as it turns out there wasn't much old growth to get rid of. If you've ever wanted to grow sage or oregano and wondered if they would come back, give them a try. I bet they will come back for you!!

From The Good Life

There's still time to enter my $55.00 CSN Stores giveaway here!!

This past summer my Thursday posts were entitled "In My Garden". When the weather started to turn cold and the flowers were gone, my Thursday posts became "From the Good Life". This week, I'm so exicited to share an indoor gardening post.

This summer I bought a Meyer Lemon "Tree". I kept it outside on the deck until the nights became too cool. Since I brought it inside and put it in our west facing living room window, it seems to be doing well. The tree has had several blossoms. After the blossoms fell, I noticed what appeared to be the start of a lemon. The first one appears to be continuing to grow, there's a second and third one just starting out as well. If you look closely at the picture, you can see the largest one in the lower left corner.

The sunlight in this window must be perfect for tropical plants. This is the window our bouganvillea has been thriving in for three years! I wonder how long it takes a lemon to fully mature?

In My Garden

The first of my zinnia's, isn't the color beautiful?

Not everything "In My Garden" is always pretty. We've had so much rain. Whenever we have a lot of rain, we find stink mushrooms in the garden. I thought this one was pretty fun looking. Tim says they really smell...I didn't get close enough to tell.

In My Garden

We had our first real Springtime storm last night. While tornado warnings were sounding in the surrounding counties, we had 50 mile per hour winds, pea size hail and sheets of rain. Have you ever seen rain coming down in sheets? It goes sideways across your lawn. Some of my flowers look a little torn and tattered but all in all everything looks pretty good.

We planted this Japanese Lilac four years ago . This is the first year it has bloomed!

I think my lettuce is almost ready to pick. What do you think?

Last summer my husband planted this yarrow plant. I thought it looked somewhat like a weed. It's much prettier this year.

One of my favorite plants in the garden is lavender. I love the beautiful purple color and amazing fragrance.

In My Garden

I love this time of year. Everything is starting to bloom. Last Spring while staying at the Sonoma Mission Inn, both Tim and I fell in love with their snake grass around the pool. We asked our landscaper friend Lynn where to find it. He suggested the Elkhorn River bottoms. One Sunday, Tim and Mike went in search of snake grass. We'd heard it was notorious for spreading, so we decided against planting it in the ground. During the wet periods of the summer, it grew well. As the summer grew hotter and dryer, it began to dry up and wilt. At the end of the summer, Tim put the pot in our outside storage area. The snake grass spent our long, cold winter outside. This Spring, as the plants began to sprout, so did our snake grass.

In My Garden

This weekend we (or should I say Tim) finished my raised garden bed. Thank You, Tim!

We planted (and yes I really did ) tomatoes, basil, oregano, rosemary and sage. We started lettuce, peas and brussels sprouts from seed. I hope you'll follow along with me to see the results.
