From The Good Life

There's still time to enter my $55.00 CSN Stores giveaway here!!

This past summer my Thursday posts were entitled "In My Garden". When the weather started to turn cold and the flowers were gone, my Thursday posts became "From the Good Life". This week, I'm so exicited to share an indoor gardening post.

This summer I bought a Meyer Lemon "Tree". I kept it outside on the deck until the nights became too cool. Since I brought it inside and put it in our west facing living room window, it seems to be doing well. The tree has had several blossoms. After the blossoms fell, I noticed what appeared to be the start of a lemon. The first one appears to be continuing to grow, there's a second and third one just starting out as well. If you look closely at the picture, you can see the largest one in the lower left corner.

The sunlight in this window must be perfect for tropical plants. This is the window our bouganvillea has been thriving in for three years! I wonder how long it takes a lemon to fully mature?

From The Good Life

After a two week hiatius, From The Good Life is back! I'd intended to post this sooner but just didn't get it done!

Thanksgiving Day, as most of you were basting the bird and baking pies, we were heading west. We met my son Justin and his girlfriend Lily in Las Vegas for Thanksgiving. It was a wonderful, albeit chilly day. Southwest gave us a free cocktail because it was turkey day. The airport wasn't crowded and getting our luggage and rental car was a breeze!! Justin took us to a delicious Thanksgiving dinner at First Food and Bar in the Palazzo.

We stayed at The Signature Suites at the MGM. I would highly recommend staying there. It's a quiet, non casino hotel. We stayed in a junior suite. They're roomy, with a microwave, fridge and even a small stove. Does anyone cook while they're in Vegas? There's a small balcony with a view of the strip. It's not the kind of balcony you can sit on but great for checking out the lights of Las Vegas.

Lily and I had pedicures on Friday. We chose the Hot Stone Pedicure at Vdara. (You know the hotel with the death ray?) The chairs were amazing. You could recline them and adjust the whirlpool in the tub with the remote. Seriously, the best pedicure I've ever had. Thank You, Lily!!!

Friday night we went to see Penn and Teller at the Rio. Lily treated us to the show. (Thanks Lily!) Our tickets were in the fourth or fifth row. You know how the performers come out into the audience and pick people to go up on stage? Yes, you guessed it. Teller chose me to go up on stage. I was horified but what do you do? It was a magic act where he was pulling money out of a large tank of water and dumping it into a fish bowl in my lap. The coins came from everywhere, my ears, my glasses and my arm. When it finally ended, Teller handed me the fishbowl and a few pennies. After the show, I had Teller autograph the bowl. It's a great conversation piece on the bar in the basement. (Photo courtesy of Tim's iPhone.)

Saturday we watched the Missouri/Kansas game at Lagasee's Stadium in the Palazzo. Tim and I went and checked out the Pawn Stars shop, Gold and Silver Pawn. We were hoping to see Chumley or The Old Man but neither were there! We celebrated Justin and Lily's birthday with dinner at The Firefly. I chose the location in the Plaza hotel because they took reservations. Little did I know the Plaza hotel was closed for renovation. As we took the elevator to the second floor, I think we were all a little skeptical about my choice. Once we were seated and ordered white sangria, I felt much better about my decision. The Firefly overlooks the Freemont Street Experience light show. If you're in Vegas and have the chance to go there, it's worth it just for the Bacon Wrapped Dates. They were fabulous!

Monday, Justin and Lily flew back to Los Angeles. Tim and I drove up to Zion National Park. Although we only saw Zion, from the roads, it's beautiful. The night before Zion received a few inches of snow. I was a little leary of the roads in our non four wheel drive Mercury. I should have known there was no need to be nervous, afterall Tim grew up in Minnesota and knows how to drive in snow!

Vegas is always fun but sharing it with Justin and Lily created great memories!!!

From The Good Life - Trader Joe's

Do you have a Trader Joe's in your city? Trader Joe's opened in Omaha last week. Tim and I stopped by on Saturday night about 7:30. The aisles were packed with shoppers and the shelves were somewhat empty. With the crowds, it was hard to see everything and shop. We decided, we'll come back when the newness wears off.

I've read lots of posts about your favorite Trader Joe's items. I wish I had written them down or saved them. We didn't have a Trader Joe's in Omaha and I didn't think we'd get one any time soon. Do you have a favorite Trader Joe product I should try?

Last Friday night, The Landscaper named Lynn, had his annual weenie roast.
As a foodie, I was happy to learn we were dining on Rick's Meats homemade Smoked Bratwurst.
(You'll have to excuse the photos, they were taken in the dark on the iPhone.)

From The Good Life

Have you had your first hard frost this year? The average first frost in Omaha is 9/23. We've been so lucky this fall, we're having our first frost tonight.

The one armed scarecrow! The wind in Nebraska is hard on him!

My oregano and sage. I am hoping if I cover it with straw, it will come back next year.
What's still growing in your yard?

From The Good Life

I've lived in the midwest all of my life. I can't remember a fall as beautiful as this one. We've had sunny, temperate weekends. I just want to savor every moment of the amazing weather!! Knowing this past weekend could be one of our last really nice weekends, we tried to be outside as much as possible. Saturday we visited Lauritzen Gardens, Omaha's botanical garden.

Many of the flowers were past their prime but the roses were still beautiful.

"The Garden in the Glen", an area featuring shade plants.

What was your favorite outing this fall?

From The Good Life

Last weekend, we were blessed with the most amazing weather. It was sunny and in the 80's, unbelievable considering it is mid October. We wanted to soak up every minute of it because just around the corner is winter.

Tim and I packed the Escape and headed to Lake of the Three Fires, just north of Bedford, Iowa. Lake of the Three Fires is a beautiful lake with two nice campgrounds. We're tenters, yes I know hard to believe I sleep in a tent! We found a nice flat spot just up from the shore of the lake. The campground was almost empty, only one other campsite was occupied. Friday night as Tim was photographing the sunset, I spotted three deer just about 50 yards away. We saw them again a couple of times over the weekend. We had a wonderful relaxing weekend and will be looking forward to weekends at Lake of the Three Fires in the Spring!

From The Good Life

When you live in the midwest, you savor every moment of fall and spring. Fall is a welcome break from the hot and humid summers. After our long, cold winters, Spring never comes quick enough.

This past weekend we were blessed with beautiful, sunny 60 degree days. Tim and I took advantage of the weather and went to the zoo. If you've ever been in Omaha, chances are you've been to our zoo. The Henry Doorly Zoo is one of Omaha's most famous attractions.

New to the zoo this year is Expedition Madagascar. The exhibit houses a number of critically endangered species, due to habitat loss and hunting.

Next to the zoo is another famous Omaha attraction, Rosenblatt Stadium. The stadium is scheduled to be demolished this year. Rosenblatt has been an Omaha icon since the 50's. Although I didn't grow up in Omaha, I have fond memories of Rosenblatt. My son Justin and I made a summer trip to Omaha when he was little. Rosenblatt has been the home of the Omaha Royals and The College World Series. The CWS will have a new stadium in 2011, TD Ameritrade Stadium in downtown Omaha. The Omaha Royals will have a new stadium in the southern part of Omaha in 2011. The team and stadium name are yet to be determined. I know Rosenblatt is old and the NCAA requested a new stadium for the CWS but it will be a sad day in Omaha when the wrecking ball flattens Rosenblatt.

From The Good Life

As the weather begins to cool off and the leaves start to turn one of the only Fall flowers in my garden is my Maximillian Sunflower. Much to my husband's dissapointment, I am not much of a mum fan. So our yard is lacking in Fall color. I need to change that, what are your favorite Fall flowers?

Today I should be posting this month's Chocolate With Francois recipe, Apple Saffron Tart. Unfortunately, life has just gotten in the way of my blogging this week. You can find the recipe at our host for this month, Accro's blog. Links to the other CWF bakers can be found here.

Can you believe this is the first day of fall? This summer went so fast! Fall is my favorite season. I just hope we have a nice long fall because I don't love what comes after fall...winter. I am so hoping we don't have a winter as harsh as last year's. As we say good bye to summer, I am sharing some of the final blooms from my garden.

From The Good Life

Labor Day weekend Tim and I went to the Minnesota State Fair. "The Great Minnesota Get Together" is one of the largest state fair's in the country. Attendance at this year's state fair was 1,776,211, just shy of last year's record attendance of 1,790,497. Not a record, but a huge crowd, 210,000 people attended the day Tim and I were there.

We experienced all of the traditional fair fun! Livestock, produce, art, machinery and last but certainly not least food. Everything you can think of on a stick. There was a booth that advertised nothing on a stick. The booth promoting their vegetable tray didn't have much of a crowd.

Bacon on a stick! And a really large tree for background!

A corn picture of Minnie and Paul!

The largest pumpkin, just over 1000 pounds!

The CROWD!

The Fair Princesses out of butter!

Aren't they cute?

What else in Minnesota...Hot Dish on Stick with Mushroom Soup dipping sauce!

From The Good Life

A couple of weeks ago, Tim and I went on a weekend camping trip to Prairie Rose State Park about an hour east of Omaha. Of course all of my friends and family had a good chuckle over the fact that I was going camping. Actually, I love to camp...cooking over a campfire, waking up to the sounds of the birds and stargazing. On Saturday to beat the afternoon heat, we took a road trip to the Danish Countryside Winery in Elk Horn, Iowa. No special camping recipes to share this week, just a few pictures of the beautiful scenery.
